Touch Probe User Guide

Intro

The Carbide 3D probe is an active probe meant to assit in finding the edges, or datums of your part. The probe is an active probe, and when contacted to ground, communicated its position to Carbide Motion.

Usage

  1. Before using the probe, it is good practice to test the clip against probe. If everythign is working then the light on the probe will turn from green to red.
  2. After confirming probe is operational, attach the clip to the cutter as shown in the image above.
  3. Position Cutter in the appropriate location relative to what type of probing operation you are going to perform.

Carbide Motion supports the 4 different types of probing: XYZ, X, Y, Z. Shown below are the specifics of using each type of probe.

Probing X/Y/Z

 

Otherwise known as corner probing, this operation will find the corner of your workpiece (X=0, Y=0) in addition to the top of the workpiece (Z=0). The setup is as follows:

  1. Position the lip of the probe over the corner of your workpiece and ensure the recessed bottom of the probe is sitting on your material.
  2. Position the cutter within 1/2” (12mm) of the probe target
  3. Begin probing cycle

After the probing operation completes, CM will store the probed positions as X=0 and Y=0. The Z-axis will retract to a safe height of 28mm above the top of the material.

Probing X

 

This operation will find the left edge of your material. The setup is as follows:

  1. Position Probe on top of workpiece (do not overhang the lip)
  2. Position the probe flush with the left edge of the workpiece
  3. Position Cutter within 1/2” (12mm) of the edge of the probe - to the outside of the material.
  4. Position cutter below the probe’s top surface
  5. Attach clip to cutter
  6. Begin probing cycle

After the probing operation completes, CM will set X=0

Probing Y

 

This operation will find the front edge of your material. The setup is as follows:

  1. Position Probe on top of workpiece (do not overhang the lip)
  2. Position the probe flush with the front edge of the workpiece.
  3. Position Cutter within 1/2” (12mm) of the edge of the probe - to the outside of the material.
  4. Position cutter below the probe’s top surface
  5. Attach clip to cutter
  6. Begin probing cycle

After the probing operation completes, CM will set Y=0

Probing Z

 

This operation will find the top of your material. The setup is as follows:

  1. Position Probe on top of workpiece (do not overhang the lip)
  2. Position Cutter within 1/2” (12mm) above the target on top of the probe
  3. Attach clip to cutter
  4. Begin probing cycle
