Low Profile Assembly Guide

Overview

This guide will show you how to install the Shapeoko Controller. This is for the current version of the Controller and Electronics Enclosure and supersedes any previous instructions.

Your Shapeoko includes an upgraded Electronics Enclosure as shown below.

The Enclosure comes with the Controller already installed. There is a bag with 4 screws:

  • 2 x M6 Screws for mounting the Enclosure to one of the rails on your Shapeoko

  • 2 x M3 for securing the outer case of the Enclosure

There will be 2 more screws installed holding the outer case of the Enclosure. They will be 2 different screws. The one closest to the USB port is a flange screw. This is a screw with a flanged area similar to what a screw with a washer installed would look like, the flange is like a built in washer. The flange is used to attach ground to your controller for a Probe.

Remove the 2 screws holding the outer case of the Enclosure and set them aside in a safe place with the other screws.

Opening the Case

With the 2 screws installed for shipping removed, the cover will not slip straight off. The side with the usb and power connections will catch on the protruding connectors. With the connection pointing toward your left, remove the top cover by sliding the top cover up in a counter clockwise swinging motion up and away on the side without the connectors, the cover will flex slightly this is normal.

Please reference the images below. Once completed your Enclosure should look similar to the image in the lower right corner. Your Enclosure is now ready to install on the rail of your Shapeoko

Installation

Start by locating the rail with two tapped screw holes on the side.

In the following images we will be showing the install for the XL/XXL first. In these installs the Connection side will face left in the images, the wire exit location will point upwards. On the Standard Model Shapeoko the Connection side will face right, the wire exit location will point downwards.

Install one of the M6 routing screws to the rail with mounting holes, leaving it loose enough you can get the mounting cutout in the Enclosure under it. Your rail should now look like the image as show below.

Choose the orientation correct for your model of Shapeoko and slide the mounting cutout in the Enclosure under the M6 screw you just installed. The connection side will point to the right on the Standard Shapeoko, the connection side will point to the left on the XL/ XXL Shapeoko. Please do this now. Your Enclosure should now look similar to the image shown below.

Swing the Enclosure so the second cutout lines up with the second hole in the rail and install the other M6 screw trapping the Enclosure. Now tighten the M6 screws down to secure the enclosure to the rail. Refer to the images below for your model of Shapeoko. Your Enclosure should now look similar to the applicable image shown below.

Getting Connected

Now you are ready to connect your Homing Switches and Motor Extensions to the controller. In the image below the angle is optimal to show both the motor and homing switch connections.

On the next page we will focus on connecting the homing switches.

Connecting the Homing Switches

The Homing Switches are plugged in starting on the pins farthest to the left in the order XYZ. You should have 4 pins left over on the right side of this row when the Homing Switches are plugged in. Go ahead and do this on your controller now. Your controller should now look similar to the image shown below.

Note depending on the Model of Shapeoko your wire colors will be different, they will still be labeled XY&Z.

Connecting the Motors Extensions

Go ahead and starting on the left most motor connector, connect the Z motor extension, followed by the Y1 motor extension, then the Y2 motor extension, and lastly the Z motor extension. Gather the motor connections so they exit the center cut out. Your controller should now look similar to the image shown below.

Closing the Case

Once you connections are correct and complete you can install the Top Cover.

The Top Cover installs in the opposite steps as it was removed.  Line up the opening for the connectors, Make sure the wires are clear and rotate the cover back into place. Your Enclosure should look similar to the image shown below.

Fastening the Top Cover

Swing the cover into the closed position, using 2 of the M3 screws, start them in the mounting holes on the right side of the Enclosure, be sure the wires are routed out of the exit hole. Your Enclosure should now look similar to the image as shown below.

*Standard Shapeoko users be aware your controller will be 180 degrees (upside down) from the image below. This means you will be installing the screws on your left side.

On the opposite side of the enclosure the Flange Screw is mounted at the top next to the USB port. If you install a probe this will your grounding point. The remaining M3 Screw is used at the bottom. Now install these screws on your Enclosure and tighten them. Your Enclosure should now look similar to the image shown below.

Standard Shapeoko users be aware your controller will be 180 degrees (upside down) from the image below and will not have a Drag Chain. This means you will be installing the screws on your right side.
